After being introduced to the music of F80E the middle of last year, I started on this path to finding more of this type of mellow/fused/jazz/funky groove. (Whew, was that description enough?)

I came across a few other artists who, like F80E, have really made an impression on me with their funky style.

They are...........

-Nightmares On Wax
-Quantic
-Thievery Corporation
-Sven Van Hees
-Compendium

Who are some of your other favorite artists?

If you like T. Corporation and F80E, I would have to recommend the following artists:

More Chilly:
- Morcheeba - Any album but Fragments of Freedom
- Tosca
- Supreme Beings of Leisure - self titled cd only
- Waiwon
- Amon Tobin
- Delerium

More Jazzy/Funky
- Early Beastie Boys such as The In Sound From Way Out
- Saint Germain
- Moses Mayes and the Funk Family Orchestra(Not available anymoe I think)
- Jamiroquai
- Count Basic (not to be confused with Count Basie)
-The Herbaliser (Session One only)

These are just some of my personal favourites, I am aware they cover a range of genres but I think they are worth listening to. Hope to here more of what other F80E listeners like as well.

- Vince

vfilby - Wassup! Thanks for that list of other artists to check out. I'll definitely do that because I'm always down for finding new music. I've heard music from a couple you mentioned tho' (St. Germain, Jamiroquai).

Rob: Any time and glad to help! I'll point out my choice songs from the artists I mentioned initially in case you want to check them out.

  • Nightmares On Wax
    Rise, Les Nuits
  • Quantic
Life In The Rain, Not So Blue
  • Thievery Corporation
The Glass Bead Game, Samba Tranquille
  • Sven Van Hees
Tsunami (Inside My Soul) [NOT the Richard Brown Mix], Ocean Jive
  • Compendium
(You can hear their clips on their label site, Maxelect Records)
Adorable, Whatever Comes, April Scans, Shake, Don't You

Other than the lads? Guess I'm the oldtimer here--still listening to Zepp and Floyd. Jazz-wise, guess it'd have to be Spyrogyra, T. Monk, The Rippingtons' with Russ Freeman (if they still qualify as jazz that is). Miles Davis' stuff from the days when he still had an ear for melody. And of course Vangelis. There's also a new (age) singer named Tina Malia who really floats my musical boat. Phenomenal voice!

First, definitely four80east! This group is cutting edge as far as the smooth jazz genre is concerned. Right behind them, and also stacked up in my CD player, are Bona Fide out of Baltimore, England's Down To The Bone, Turning Point out of Arizona, and Fishbelly Black from D.C. Simply too cool!

F80E is current favorite without a close second. My Jazz listening is Metheny, Chris Standring, Yellowjackets, Marcus Miller, Down to the Bone, and Kenton/Basie/Ferguson Big Band classics. My electro playlist is Blue Six, All Naked Music label stuff, any track remixed by Miguel Migs, Jazzanova, and dHizan & Kamien. Finally I gotta ask the Board Admin...Will Four80East tour with live performances? Thanks for the site...keep makin that groove for us. DW

One of my favorites groups that I have not seen mentioned in previous posts is 'Citrus Sun'. From what I understand, this band was a collection of folks from England from other bands. Since they are all in other bands, I am not sure if they are going to be able to release another album or not, but the one album that is out (Another Time Another Space) is fantastic!

Hey Rob & Tony. I hope that all is well!

I am all over the place with my artists...from Getz, Charlie Parker, Miles, Coletrane to Weather Report, Yellowjackets, Bob James, Fourplay, Acoustic Alchemy and Bela Fleck. Besides you guys, my fav is probably Hiroshima.

Message to Guest from England - I don't know if you are still reading this site but Citrus Sun was basically a project formed by Bluey the brains behind Incognito, a forerunner of Acid Jazz along with Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai in the nineties. All three bands are still moving on, the later still having significant commercial success in the UK and Europe. But Incognito (www.incognito.org.uk), still doing well in Japan, and the BNH have new projects released in the next month or two.

May I take an opportunity to add a UK band to your list, Paprika Soul, a more dance influenced jazz but still worth a listen chaps.

Still, only own "Nocturnal" at the moment so I guess I have alot of hunting to do.

Rob, I'm impressed. You guys are doing a great job. All of your projects are slammin' and with such style and grace. You have been able to mesh funk, acid jazz, fusion, smooth, cool, latin, hip-hop, rap and whew! and what else. This is the gumbo of music and it's tastin good to my ears. Would love hear you team up with Pat Metheny or George Duke, two of my favorites. But your style is still the $#!*.

Got a new computer yesterday with a media player program and have been hanging at amazon for the past 24 hours straight:) checking out other groups. Two standouts come to mind as possible purchase prospects for fans of f8e's music: Acoustic Alchemy, a UK based group with a distinctive, space jazz/new age sound, and; Bona Fide, a group outta Baltimore. Skull thumping bass riffs and sharp, original sounding grooves. Dave Benoit's latest is good too.

Post subject: Music that I like
PostPosted: Mon Mar 31, 2003 11:26 am
 I've been into music for a long time and some of the artist that I've come to like over the years are:

George Duke, Jeff Lorber, Wayman Tisdale, Ronnie Laws, Bob James,
Phyllis Hyman, Kenny Gorleck(Kenny G), Return to forever, Kirk Walhum,
Lisa Stansfield, Four80 East, 3rd Force, Rick Braun, Freddie Hubbard ETC...

I could go on forever.

Good music is from the heart and soul, it's not about the money it's about making people happy. While making music, you hope the people feel what you did when you concieved of it, it's about the feeling.
